The Economic Development Administration, otherwise known as EDA, is an agency that is operating under the United States Department of Commerce.

The purpose of the Economic Development Administration is to provide financial opportunities to economically distressed communities in order to generate new cases of employment, retain current jobs and stimulate commercial and industrial growth.

The initiatives of the EDA are always guided by their overall agency mission which is to "lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy."

In keeping with this mission, the Economic Development Administration has recently established the Public Works and Economic Adjustment Assistance Program in an effort to solicit applications from urban and rural communities to create initiatives that could potentially advance new ideas and innovative strategies in an effort to address constantly changing economic conditions.

The program specifically targets the provision of funding to construction, non-construction, and continuously revolving loan fund investments.

In addition, the program also desires to provide assistance to distressed communities and regions which have flexible and comprehensive resources in order to address a wide selection of economic needs, thereby leading to the creation of job opportunities and improved private investments.
