The United States Department of Defense, otherwise known as DOD, is a federal government agency that is generally in-charge of coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government relating directly to national security and the United States armed forces.

The grants and programs of the DOD are all entirely designed to assist in the realization of its overall agency mission which is to "provide the military forces needed to deter war and to protect the security of our country."

In line with this mission, the United States Department of Defense has recently established the 2012 Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Clinical Trial Award Program in an attempt to financially support the studies regarding the promotion innovative research focused on decreasing the clinical impact of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC).

Initially, the primary objective of the Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Clinical Trial Award Program is to encourage the execution of innovative research studies aimed at understanding the pathogenesis of TSC and ultimately, translate these findings to the care of individuals with TSC.
