The Health Resources and Services Administration, otherwise known as HRSA, is a federal government agency operating within the United States Department of Health and Human Services that's largely accountable for improving access to health care services for people who are uninsured, isolated or medically vulnerable.

The grants and programs of the HRSA are all designed to contribute to the attainment of its main agency mission which is to "improve health and achieve health equity through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce and innovative programs."
In keeping with this mission, the Health Resources and Services Administration has recently constituted the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship Program wherein it aims to increase the number of primary care providers through the provision of training programs to nurses who are pursuing advanced degrees primary care nurse practitioners (NP) or nurse-midwives.
The Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship Program is an approximately 56 year old Federal program that is administered by the Bureau of Health Professions, Division of Nursing.
