The National Institute of Food and Agriculture, also referred to as NIFA, is an agency operating within the Department of Agriculture which was primarily created under the mandate of the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act (FCEA) of 2008.

The NIFA's work is designed to serve as an instrument that will stimulate the development of research studies and technological innovations aimed towards the improvement of the processes involved in American agriculture, thereby resulting to a more productive and environmentally sustainable system.

In keeping with the agency's goals and objectives, NIFA has recently announced a funding opportunity entitled Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) grant program, wherein the they plan to administer funds in the total amount of $28 million for the fiscal year 2011.

The Agriculture and Food Research Initiative grant program revolves around the premise of providing funds to both fundamental and applied research studies, education, and extension that would hopefully address concerns related to food and agricultural sciences.

NIFA plans to achieve its program objectives through the awarding of fellowship grants to eligible individuals that would hopefully become the future generation of scientists who will raise the field of agriculture into new heights by providing solutions to current and future agriculture-related issues.
