The Bureau of African Affairs is an agency operating within the United States Department of State that is primarily responsible for advising the Secretary of State on matters of Sub-Saharan Africa.

The agency was established in the year 1958 was has been working towards the achievement of its general agency mission which is to "shape and sustain a peaceful, prosperous, just, and democratic world and foster conditions for stability and progress for the benefit of the American people and people everywhere."

In line with this mission, the Bureau of African Affairs has recently established the Women in Public Service Project wherein it aims to build a generation of women leaders who will be willing to invest in their countries and communities, offer leadership services to the government, and work towards the potential of changing the way global solutions are developed.

The programs seeks to create training, mentoring and networking opportunities for emerging and aspiring women leaders in the field of public service since the bureau believes that the participation of women leaders is very much essential in addressing a wide range of challenges in the society at present.
