National Science Foundation: Broadening Participation Research Initiation Grants in Engineering (BRIGE)

by:

The National Science Foundation(NSF) is an independent US Government federal agency created by the Congress in the year 1950 with the working objective of promoting the progress of science; advancing the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and finally securing the national defense.

With that, the NSF constantly supports fundamental research and education in various non-medical fields of science and engineering; such as mathematics, computer science, economics, and social sciences.

In order to address the need to encourage diversity in its programs, the Directorate for Engineering(ENG) at the NSF has recently established the Broadening Participation Research Initiation Grants in Engineering Program, otherwise known as BRIGE.

The BRIGE program hopes to increase the participation of novice investigators who are just starting their professional career in all fields of engineering research.

In addition to that, the BRIGE program also aims to provide more research opportunities to the engineering workforce of the future, including those from under-represented groups, and finally to encourage individual investigators to participate in engineering-related research.

The BRIGE program is set to administer up to 25-30 grant awards to eligible principal investigators, with an anticipated total program budget of $5,000,000 for the fiscal year 2012.

Interested applicants are required to electronically submit applications and proposals to the Grants.gov website. Deadline of the said submission will be on January 20, 2012.

Interested applicants will be eligible to apply if they are:

a) A member of college of university that is accredited and is located in the US
