b) A member of an accredited academic institution located in the US

For this program, eligible applicants will be considered as "Principal Investigators(PI)", listed below are guidelines to be observed by the PI:

a) Only one proposal per PI is allowed; co-principal investigators and senior personnel will not be permitted

b) The PI must hold a primary position in a engineering department (of universities, colleges, and other academic institutions)

c) If the PI wishes to collaborate with other scientists or researchers, only the PI will receive funding.

The National Science Foundation, the agency funding the BRIGE program, annually funds approximately 20% of basic; federally-supported college and university studies. During the year 2010, the NSF had an annual budget of $6.87 billion dollars, which was then used to issue competitive, limited grants, in response to specific proposals from the research community.

The Directorate of Engineering at the NSF promotes diversity in all aspects of its programs. Which is why the BRIGE program intends to be an instrument in encouraging the active participation of engineers from all segments of the engineering community, specifically those that are coming from fairly under-represented groups.

Furthermore, the agency also believes that through BRIGE program, they will be able to extend their resources to engineers who share their commitment to diversity in the following ways, as stated in their official announcement:

a) Fund engineering research projects that use greatly innovative ways to attract and retain members of under-represented groups in engineering

b) Increase the number of engineering researchers and competitively engage in research as independent investigators, thereby creating new research ideas and opportunities for students at the minority.
