The work of The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is patterned to enable them realize their agency's mission, which is to "pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research."

In addition to all its existing program, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has established the Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) 2011 Program in order to support their agency's Science Mission Directorate (SMD).

The program seeks to solicit basic and applied research studies associated with earth sciences and space technology including theories, models, and the analysis of Science Mission Directorate data.
