The National Institutes of Health, otherwise known as NIH, is an agency that is operating within the Department of Health and Human Services.

The National Institutes of Health is the United States government's principal agency that is responsible for most of the country's biomedical and health-related research studies.

The mission of the NIH is to continuously obtain new information that would help prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat diseases and disabilities.

In line with this mission, the NIH has recently constituted the Small Business Innovation Research Phase IIB Bridge Awards to Accelerate the Development of Cancer Therapeutics, Imaging Technologies, Interventional Devices, Diagnostics, and Prognostics Toward Commercialization Program.

The program is in conjunction with the long running Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program of NIH. The purpose of the SBIR program is to facilitate the innovation of solutions to existing health challenges by aiding the commercialization of the technologies that have been developed by small business concerns.
