The National Institute of Food and Agriculture, more commonly referred to as NIFA, is a federal government agency that was created under the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008.

NIFA operates under the United States Department of Agriculture, and is primarily responsible for stimulating and funding research and technological innovations that are especially designed to boost and improve American agriculture; make it more productive and environmentally sustainable while ensuring the economic viability of agriculture and production.

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture has recently established the Special Research Grants Program - Pest Management Alternatives in an attempt to provide support for the development and implementation of integrated pest management practices, tactics and systems for specific pest problems while at simultaneously reducing human and environmental risks.

The program is initially created to address challenges that are halting the successful management of pest problems in commercial production. Some of these challenges include regulatory changes, emergence of new pest problems, and the development of pest resistance to present management technologies.

NIFA has specifically outlined three main objectives for the Special Research Grants Program - Pest Management Alternatives, they are as follows:
